Countdown to UK-Wide Ban on Single-Use Vapes: Businesses Urged to Prepare Now

Retailers across Wales – and the rest of the UK – are being reminded they have just under two months to prepare for a major change in the law: from 1 June 2025, the sale and supply of single-use vapes will be banned nationwide.

The ban, announced by the UK Government and backed by the Welsh Government, aims to tackle the environmental damage caused by disposable vapes, which frequently end up as litter or in landfill. Many contain non-recyclable parts and pose a fire risk due to built-in lithium batteries.

The Welsh Government has already written to small and medium-sized retailers across the country who are known to sell single-use vapes, advising them to take urgent action. However, the ban applies to all retailers and suppliers across the UK, regardless of size or location.

Under the new rules, from 1 June 2025, businesses must:

  • Stop selling single-use vapes to customers or other businesses

  • Cease buying single-use vapes from wholesalers

  • Inform staff and customers about the upcoming changes

Retailers still holding stock of single-use vapes after 1 June are being urged to contact suppliers or waste management companies to arrange for safe and legal recycling. These products must not be placed in household bins due to their hazardous components, which include batteries, plastic, and metal.

Failure to comply with the ban or properly dispose of leftover stock could lead to commercial losses and potential legal enforcement action.

Retailers are encouraged to begin stocking reusable alternatives and update their product lines well ahead of the ban to ensure a smooth transition.
