Brains unveils limited edition ‘Reverend James Reserve’ ale to celebrate 140 years of the original brew

Brains Brewery is proud to announce the release of Reverend James Reserve, a limited edition 5.5% ABV ale, marking 140 years of the Reverend James Ale.
This celebratory ale is a bold, contemporary homage to the original 1885 recipe, offering a punchier, more robust take on the beloved ale.
Crafted using Buckley’s original yeast strain, Reverend James Reserve delivers depth, complexity, and a richer, fuller-bodied experience.
The ale’s reddish hue nods to its heritage while its flavour profile is a masterful blend of caramel and fruit notes, with subtle hints of raisin and plum. The inclusion of double roasted crystal malt adds layers of complexity and a smooth, well-rounded finish.
Brains has proudly brewed the original Reverend James since 1988, following the purchase of Crown Buckley Brewery, in February 1997. Since then, it has become Brains’ flagship ale and one of Wales’ most cherished beers.
This limited release stands as a tribute to the craftsmanship and innovation that has defined Brains Brewery since 1882.
Brains Managing Director Nick Payne said:
“Reverend James Buckley Reserve is more than a limited edition; it’s a celebration of 140 years of brewing knowledge, tradition, and passion.
“We wanted to honour our history while crafting something distinct and memorable. This ale is our way of raising a glass to the generations of brewers who came before us – and those who have supported us every step of the way.
“It’s not just about Brains, but about all the great brewers and breweries that went before us.”
