Anglesey Pub Crowned Community Fundraising Hero After Raising More Than £319,000

The Bull Inn in Llannerchymedd recognised at the House of Commons for extraordinary fundraising for charities, clubs and its local community.

An Anglesey pub that has raised more than £319,000 for good causes has been named Wales’ Community Fundraising Hero at the PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards 2026.

The Bull Inn in Llannerchymedd received the award at a ceremony in the House of Commons last night (8 September), following its nomination by Ynys Môn MP Llinos Medi.

After the pub had stood empty for years, a local family bought it and set about returning it to the heart of village life. Since reopening, fundraising has become central to the pub, supporting local charities, community organisations and sports clubs.

Its annual Cneifio Cylch sheep-shearing event has become particularly well known across Anglesey, with competitors battling to be crowned fastest shearer before an auction brings the community together to raise funds. Last year alone the event generated £60,300, shared between Wales Air Ambulance, Hope House Children’s Hospice, the Heulwen cancer treatment unit and Plas Crigyll dementia day care centre.

The pub also hosts quizzes, bingo and Welsh concerts for organisations including the Urdd Eisteddfod, local schools and nurseries, while supporting its local football club and its growing youth and girls’ sections.

Llinos Medi MP, MP for Ynys Môn, said: “The Bull Inn is at the heart of village life in Llannerchymedd and its fundraising record is quite remarkable. Since reopening, the family has given an enormous amount of time and energy to supporting charities, clubs, local organisations and people across the community. Raising more than £319,000 is an incredible achievement, but what makes the pub so special is the way it brings people together while doing it. This is hugely deserved recognition.”

Des O’Flanagan, Co-Founder of PubAid, said: “The Bull Inn is a brilliant example of just how important pubs are to the communities they serve. What they have achieved in Llannerchymedd, from raising more than £319,000 for charities, clubs and good causes, shows that a great pub is about so much more than food and drink; it is a place that brings people together, supports those who need it and makes a real difference locally.

“We’re delighted to recognise The Bull Inn as a Community Pub Hero and celebrate the incredible contribution they continue to make to Llannerchymedd. Their story is exactly what these awards are all about, shining a light on the people and pubs that sit at the heart of communities across the UK.”

The pub was one of 13 category winners recognised across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, celebrating the contribution pubs make through community support, fundraising, grassroots sport and sustainability.

The 2026 awards attracted hundreds of entries from across the UK and a record number of nominations from MPs, highlighting growing recognition in Parliament of the role pubs play within their constituencies.

The evening also saw Tonia Antoniazzi MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, presented with a special award recognising her tireless work championing pubs and her support for PubAid, the Beer Group and the wider industry. It is the first time PubAid has presented the special award.

The PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards 2026 are sponsored by Diageo and supported by the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group (APPBG).
