The Welsh House by Wynne, Carmarthen – Well Worth a Visit!

Written by Lisa and Mark Baker

We were always fans of Wynne Evans and like most of his fans here in Wales, we felt the whole Strictly scandal was blown out of all proportion – hurting on his behalf and hoping he would quickly bounce back from what seemed an unnecessarily targeted and hurtful series of knockbacks.

Thankfully, Wynne didn’t just recover – he’s thriving and despite the challenges, the end result has been good for Wales.

Wynne is back here in Wales and doing what he does best, entertaining his fans with his warm humour and personality – and he is loved as much as ever.

Now running his new independent radio show without the constraints of the BBC, engaging fans in person with regular mental health walks, and displaying his ‘Masterchef’ cooking abilities as a partner at chain Welsh House’s Carmarthen town centre venue, Wynne is definitely ‘wynning’ at life after exiting the BBC.

Multi-talented, warm and a fabulous singer, Wynne’s the consummate entertainer – but enough about his talents – lets talk about his cooking!

Our friends visited the restaurant for Sunday lunch recently and came back with rave reviews so we thought we’d check it out in person – and it was an experience well worth the journey from Bridgend.

‘The Welsh House by Wynne’ is located in the heart of Carmarthen town centre, in St. Catherine’s Walk, with plentiful parking available in the nearby multi-storey car park.

The hospitality was warm and waiter Christian (who had only joined the day before) delivered fabulous service and was extremely friendly and pleasant, adding to the atmosphere.

The warm welcome went down very well on an otherwise wet and rainy day – and complemented Wynne’s own engaging style as he visited every table providing charm, hospitality and entertainment in equal measure as before making his way back to the kitchen – clearly leading the team both front and back of house, taking orders, recommending dishes and engaging customers.  It’s clear to see that he’s adding value to a well-established and much-loved Welsh dining chain.

The ’70’s Style Prawn Cocktail’

We began with a starter of what Wynne himself described as “a 70’s style prawn cocktail”, on as a special.  It’s definitely an old classic, but it was light, fresh, and utterly delicious – the perfect way to set the tone for the meal ahead.

For our mains, we opted for the classic Sunday lunch – and we definitely were not disappointed.  I enjoyed the beautifully tender roast beef, cooked to perfection, while Mark, not someone who could choose between all the meats on offer, opted for the trio of all the meats – all were equally outstanding.

Mark’s ‘Trio of Meats’ – perfect for the person who can’t choose between the meats on offer!

Alongside the seasonal carrots and tenderstem broccoli included with the roast, we treated ourselves to extra sides of cauliflower cheese, leek gratin, and buttered peas. The leek gratin and cauliflower cheese were truly exceptional – rich, creamy, and full of flavour – and if you go, you really must give them a try!

The Delicious Leek Gratin

The homemade Yorkshire puddings were wonderfully crisp yet fluffy, and the thick, flavoursome gravy tied everything together into what can only be described as one of the finest Sunday lunches we’ve ever had.

Although we were far too full to sample dessert this time, we couldn’t help but notice other tables enjoying theirs – they looked every bit as impressive as the food we had already enjoyed – and we will definitely be back to try them next time.

Sadly, we don’t live close enough to visit weekly, however our drive to Carmarthen was more than worth it – and we’ll certainly be back soon.
